| This Course and its Future |
"Tropical Entomology" was the inspiration of Dr José Clavijo, a faculty member of the Departamento de Zoología Agrícola, Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV).
As currently organized, this course has two parts. In "Summer A" (May-June) students take lecture-based classes in the Entomology and Nematology Department at the University of Florida (UF). In "Summer B," students who have attended the classes may register for the course's "laboratory," which is a 10 day field trip to Venezuela in July. Students must be able to spare the time and pay for the trip. In Venezuela, UCV faculty members and students are (in part) guides and lecturers. Students pay fees to - and receive credits from - the University of Florida.
Discussion is taking place about future expansion of the course to allow South American students - who have not attended the lectures at UF - to participate, to hear many more lectures (perhaps in Spanish) in Venezuela, and to pay fees to UCV. Language is a barrier, but it is not anticipated that students registered at UF will have to attend lectures in Spanish. Nor will UF students spend more than 10 days in Venezuela, nor costs increase (except as dictated by inflation). A potential advantage for English-speaking UF students is the interaction with entomology students (and more faculty members) from South American countries.
